SFAI approaches photography as a visual and conceptual tool, a way to construct narrative, and a means to document the world. The photography curriculum prepares students to bring a critical and historical understanding of the photographic medium in the exploration of conceptual ideas with new image making capabilities.

Students work in both digital and analogue formats with the opportunity to experiment with a variety of photographic processes, print surfaces, and equipment while considering issues around representation, scale, installation, site-specific works, and audience.

BFA SPOTLIGHT

Ed Drew has been featured in the likes of the New Yorker, The Guardian, The Daily Dot, and many others for his critically acclaimed Tin Type photo series that he completed while stationed in Afghanistan. We were hired by the San Francisco Art Institute to create a short piece on his work and how SFAI has helped cultivate his creative mindset.
